Shaved Sahel castrated billy goat skin (very very thick)
3 in stock
The castrated billygoat skin is appreciated by percussionists who seek the almost total absence of harmonics.
It is important to choose a thick djembe shell, with dry wood of very good quality to mount this type of skin. Indeed, the thicker the skin (castrated goat, cowhide), the greater the risk of deformation of the djembe shell.
These rare skins represent only 1 to 2% of the livestock.
They are selected in slaughterhouses where they are directly shaved after being degreased, before being naturally dried.
They retain all their original freshness and quality, but may require a little cleaning during soaking before assembly to eliminate any possible disturbing aspects such as:
– animal odour: change the soaking water several times, possibly add a little scented bleach.
– deformation: your skin will return to its original shape when soaked (dried on the ground, it may have taken on the shape of a stone or an object that was there)
– traces of paint: erase them after mounting your skin with sandpaper or a razor blade (this is a residue of marking traces used by breeders to recognise their animals)
- Length: 65 ∼ 90 cm
- Width: 60 ∼ 75 cm
- Thickness: 1,5 ∼ 1,8 mm
- African handicrafts (Mali)

These natural skins sometimes present minor defects with no consequences, neither on their quality nor on the sound of your instrument.
